We have all fantasized about that 1,000-megawatt Hollywood smile from time to time, and for good reason. Veneers have made attaining the picture-perfect teeth possible for the past few decades. The only downside has been that traditional veneers require losing a significant amount of tooth enamel in the process. Enter: non-invasive veneers, the newer, more reversible alternative. But are they really a better option?
We’ll take a look at the advantages, disadvantages and whether you may be a good candidate for non-invasive veneers. Then you can decide to call the Lubbock-based team at Hancock and Johnston Dentistry to see if non-invasive veneers are the right solution for you.
What Are Non-Invasive Veneers?
Traditional veneers may require your dentist to grind up to 0.5 millimeters of enamel off your tooth to bond the veneer to it.
Non-invasive veneers (or no-prep veneers or minimal-prep veneers) require no such prep. Unlike traditional veneers, there is no enamel removal, just ultra-thin shells that adhere to the front surface of your teeth — protecting your tooth structure.
Dentists can make impressions of your teeth, create the veneers and install them all on the same day.

The Advantages of Non-Invasive Veneers
No Enamel Removal
We’ve already pointed this out, but it is a big consideration: Preserving the natural tooth structure. Not only is the process easier up front, you don’t have to worry about increasing any tooth sensitivity later because your enamel will remain intact. If you are scared of major dental work that involves anesthesia but still crave that celebrity smile, non-invasive veneers get you there relatively painlessly.
Procedure Can Be Reversible
Usually non-invasive veneers can be removed without causing major damage to your underlying teeth. There is a bit of risk, but compared with traditional veneers the risk is minimal.
They Are Long Lasting
No-prep veneers can last 5 to 7 years or longer, sometimes up to 15 years.
The Disadvantages of Non-Invasive Veneers
They May Not Be As Durable
Non-invasive veneers are thinner than traditional veneers, which can sometimes make them less durable. They may be more prone to chipping or cracking.
Rigorous Dental Hygiene
You’ll really need to focus on your dental hygiene to get the most out of your non-invasive veneers. Cleaning your teeth around your gum line and removing any debris there is key. If bacteria builds up and causes decay, you’ll find yourself having to pull teeth and get root canals.
There Are Aesthetic Limitations
Non-invasive veneers do not significantly alter the tooth’s shape, so they may not always deliver the same level of aesthetic enhancement as traditional veneers. Something to keep in mind if you want a dramatic before-and-after.
Who is the Best Candidate for Non-Invasive Veneers?
Non-invasive veneers would work for you if you have healthy teeth and gums and are looking to fix minor cosmetic imperfections. This includes small chips and minimal gaps.
Other imperfections that can be remedied with non-invasive veneers:
- Misshapen, fanged or pointy and slightly misaligned teeth
- Slightly crowded teeth
- Worn teeth
- Small teeth
Do they fit your “bite”?
The biggest consideration is how your upper and lower teeth come together, your “bite.” If there is not room for the non-prep veneers, then you may not be a candidate. Proper evaluation of the patient helps create a smile you’ll and one that will last.
If you need a complete transformation, with issues including severe misalignment, large gaps, or extensive decay, you may need to consider alternative treatments. If you have stained teeth, non-invasive veneers are too thin to provide the coverage you need to hide the discoloration.
Additionally, if you grind your teeth (bruxism), non-invasive veneers are not ideal for you.
